Kalashtami Vrat is extremely important for the devotees of Lord Bhairava. This fast is observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha every month. On this day, Lord Bhairava is worshiped and revered. Kalashtami is also known as Kaala Ashtami. In particular, Kalbhairav Jayanti, also known as Bhairav Ashtami, is the most important day of Kalashtami. It is believed that Lord Shiva incarnated as Bhairava on this day.
Date and Rules of Kalashtami Vrat
Kalashtami Vrat is mainly observed on the day when Ashtami Tithi falls at night time. This fast can also be observed on Saptami Tithi if according to religious scriptures, Ashtami Tithi ends at night. On the day of the fast, devotees observe fast for the whole day and worship Lord Bhairava at night time.
Worship Method of Kalashtami Vrat
Bath and Purity
- Get up early in the morning and take a bath and purify the house.
- Take a resolution to worship Lord Bhairava.
Worship of Lord Bhairav
- Light a lamp in front of the idol or picture of Lord Bhairav.
- Offer him black sesame seeds, mustard oil, flowers, and coconut.
- Feed Bhairav's vehicle dog, it is considered auspicious.
Bhajans and Paaths
- Recite Kalbhairav Ashtak, Shiv Chalisa, or Bhairav Stotra.
- Sing the hymns of Lord Bhairav.
Fasting and Meditation
- Fast throughout the day and avoid tamasic food.
- Meditate and worship Lord Bhairav at night.
End of the fast
- End the fast by eating food the next day morning.
