Bhagavad Gita Chapter 7, Verse 5

This verse is from the Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 7, Verse 5. It is written in Sanskrit and translates to English as follows:

apareyam itas tvanyāṁ prakṛitiṁ viddhi me parām
jīva-bhūtāṁ mahā-bāho yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat ||5||

English translation:

"O mighty-armed one (Arjuna)! This (inert) nature is Apara (lower). I have another nature different from this and superior (supreme), which you know – which is in the form of a living being and by which this entire world is sustained."

Explanation in detail:

Lower Krishna is talking about two types of nature here:

  • Apara Prakriti (Lower Nature) - Inanimate nature made up of Panchamahabhuta (earth, water, fire, air, sky), mind, intellect and ego.
  • Para Prakriti (Higher Nature) - Conscious nature, which is called "jivatma".

The Lord says that "This conscious nature of mine (power in the form of living beings) is sustaining this entire universe." This means that it is the living force which gives motion to this inert nature.
