Magh is the name of a month in Hinduism, which is called Magh month in the lunar Hindu calendar. According to the Hindu religion Vikram Sawant, there are 11 months. The months of January and February are in the Gregorian calendar.

According to the Hindu calendar, each month has its own importance, thus the month of Magh is also important. It is important to take a bath in the Ganges in the month of Magh. It is believed that by doing charity, bathing and fasting in the month of Magh one gets freedom from all sins. The person who bathes in the holy Ganges river in the month of Magh and offers arghya to the Sun, gets freedom from all sins and gets all the happiness by the grace of Lord Vishnu.

The month of Magh is the eleventh month in Vikram Samvat. The names of the Hindu months are based on the constellations. In Hinduism, the changing of the month depends on the lunar cycle, the constellation on which the moon is located, that month is named on the basis of that constellation. On the full moon of Magh month, the Moon resides in Magh and Ashlesha constellations, hence this month is called Magh month. The full moon of Magh month occurs around a group of stars named "Magh". Sun enters Capricorn in the month of Magh.

According to mythological texts, Gautam Rishi had cursed Indredev in the month of Magh, then Indradev had bathed in the Ganges in the month of Magh, as a result of which Indradev got freedom from the curse. In this month, bathing on full moon and new moon days is considered holy.
