In the Hindu calendar, Amavasya is the day when the moon is not visible. The moon completes one revolution around the earth in 30 days. For 15 days, the moon is on the other side of the earth and cannot be seen from India. The day when the moon is not fully visible is called Amavasya. Amavasya comes once in a month. The waxing and waning phase of the moon is called Paksha, there are two types of it, Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha.
Shukla Paksha: The moon progresses from Amavasya to Poornima, it is called Ujjwal.
Krishna Paksha: The moon progresses from Poornima to Amavasya, it is called Andheri. It is believed that no auspicious work is done during this period.
Amavasya is considered highly important in Hindu scriptures. This day is dedicated to the Pitrs, i.e. the ancestors who have passed away. It is said that on Amavasya, one should take a bath and meditate on God, stay away from bad addictions, and feed the poor, helpless and needy elderly.
Amavasya is called the day of the ancestors. Feeding someone on this day means that we are offering food to our ancestors. Doing so relieves us from Pitra Dosh and gives peace to the soul of the ancestors.
These Amavasya dates are according to the Hindu calendar and are considered important all over India. These dates are important for religious and social occasions and are useful in various religious functions.
