Shri Satyanarayan Puja is performed to seek the blessings of God Narayan, a form of Lord Vishnu. In this form, Lord Vishnu is considered an embodiment of truth. While there is no specific day for Satyanarayan Puja, performing it on Purnima (full moon day) is thought to be very auspicious.
Devotees should fast on the day of the Puja. The Puja can be done in the morning or evening, but it is generally considered better to do it in the evening so that the fast can be broken with Prasadam (sacred offering).
The dates for Shree Satyanarayan Puja are usually listed for the evening. This means the Puja day might sometimes fall on Chaturdashi, the day before Purnima. If you prefer to do the Puja in the morning, check the Panchang (Hindu calendar) to ensure it is still within the Purnima Tithi (lunar day). On Purnima day, the Tithi might end in the morning, so morning Puja might not always be suitable.
The Puja rituals involve worshipping Lord Satyanarayan, a kind form of Lord Vishnu. The deity, often represented by a Saligram (a sacred stone), is cleaned with Panchamritam, a mixture of milk, honey, ghee (clarified butter), yogurt, and sugar. The Prasad includes Panjiri (sweet roasted wheat flour), bananas, and other fruits, with Tulasi leaves added to make it sacred.
Another important part of the Puja is listening to the Katha, the story of the Puja. The Satyanarayan Katha explains the origin of the Puja, its benefits, and the consequences of not performing it.
The Puja ends with an Aarti, where a small fire ignited with Kapoor (camphor) is circled around the deity. After the Aarti, participants and those who have been fasting consume the Panchamritam and the Prasad. Those fasting can eat the Prasad after breaking their fast with the Panchamritam.
