In India Hindu months, there are two Chaturthi Tithis in each lunar month. Purnima during Purnimaasi or Krishna Paksha is known as Sankashti Chaturthi and during Amavasya during Shukla Paksha as Vinayaka Chaturthi. Fasting is considered strict and only fruits, roots like potatoes etc. and vegetable products should be consumed.
Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Ganesh Sankathara or Sankathara Chaturthi among Hindus.
According to mythology, the tradition of fasting on Chaturthi Tithi dates back to the time of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Lord Ganesha is believed to have been born on this day. Chaturthi Tithi is considered extremely holy and auspicious as it is his birthday.
Chaturthi Tithi is important not only from the religious point of view but also for spiritual and mental peace. Worshiping Lord Ganesha on this day leads to success in every sphere of life. If you wish for happiness, peace and prosperity, then definitely observe fast and worship on Chaturthi Tithi.
