In India Hindu months, there are two Chaturthi Tithis in each lunar month. Purnima during Purnimaasi or Krishna Paksha is known as Sankashti Chaturthi and during Amavasya during Shukla Paksha as Vinayaka Chaturthi. Fasting is considered strict and only fruits, roots like potatoes etc. and vegetable products should be consumed.

Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Ganesh Sankathara or Sankathara Chaturthi among Hindus.

Types of Chaturthi Tithi

Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha: It is called Vinayaka Chaturthi. This date is considered auspicious for the beginning of new works.
Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha: It is known as Sankashti Chaturthi. Fasting on this day with the worship of Lord Ganesha removes all the troubles and obstacles of life.

Fasting and Puja Vidhi on Chaturthi Tithi

On the day of Chaturthi Tithi, take a bath in the morning and wear clean clothes.
Light a lamp in front of the idol of Lord Ganesha and worship him.
Recite Ganpati Stotra, Ganesh Chalisa and Mantras.
Fasting on this day has special significance. Eat fruits during the fast and offer Durva, Laddu and Modak to Lord Ganesha.
At night, break the fast by offering Arghya to the moon.
