Vat Purnima Vrat is one of the most auspicious festivals of Hinduism, also known as Jyestha Purnima or Vat Savitri Purnima. 'Purnima' means full moon, and this fast is observed on the full moon day (15th day) of the Jyestha month of the Hindu calendar, which falls in the months of May-June according to the Gregorian calendar.
According to the Narada Purana, Vat Savitri Vrat can be observed on both Jyestha Amavasya and Jyestha Purnima. Skanda Purana mentions Jyestha Purnima as the date of the fast, while Nirnayamrit mentions Jyestha Amavasya as the date of the fast.
Vat Purnima Vrat is observed by Hindus living in various states of India and abroad. This holy fast is dedicated to Goddess Gauri and Sati Savitri. It is celebrated with great pomp in Maharashtra and Gujarat, while it is also celebrated with devotion in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Orissa. In Karnataka and Tamil Nadu of South India, this fast is called 'Kardaiyan Nonbu'.
On the day of Vat Purnima fast, married women worship 'Savitri-Satyavan' and Vat (Banyan) tree. Banyan tree has special importance in Hinduism, because it is considered a symbol of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. The roots of the Vat tree represent Brahma, the trunk represents Vishnu and the upper part represents Shiva. By worshiping under this holy tree, devotees can fulfill all their wishes.
On the full moon day of Jyeshtha month, devotees bring idols of 'Yamraj riding a buffalo' and 'Savitri-Satyavan' made of clay or gold. Then the idols are worshipped with vermilion, saffron, incense-sandalwood and fruits. This fast is believed to bless one with good fortune and a happy married life, just like Savitri got her husband Satyavan back from Yamraj.
The glory of Vat Purnima has been described in many Hindu scriptures like Skanda Purana, Nirnayamrit and Bhavishyottar Purana. This holy fast is observed by married Hindu women for the well-being of their husbands and children. It is the faith in this fast that makes it so holy and auspicious. Pregnant women, working women or women suffering from any disease can also perform this puja even if they do not observe the fast. By dedicating their prayers, they can get the same benefits as those who dutifully observe the fast.
Vat Purnima Vrat not only strengthens the bond between married couples, but it also honors the spirit of womanhood. The virtue of this fast makes the seeker attain the desired fruit and removes the misery and poverty prevailing in the house.
