Budh Ashtami is a big religious festival for Hindu devotees. The festival is celebrated on 'Ashtami' tithi (8th day), when it falls on 'Wednesday' in the Hindu lunar calendar. Budh Ashtami can occur during the 'Shukla Paksha' (light fortnight of the moon) or 'Krishna Paksha' (dark fortnight of the moon) of a month. On this day devotees worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and offer their prayers to them.
According to Hindu legends, a person observing fast on Budh Ashtami never has to go to hell after death. Hence Hindu devotees observe Budh Ashtami fast for prosperity and well-being in their life. This fast is especially observed in Gujarat, Maharashtra and northern states of India.
On the day of Budh Ashtami, devotees worship planet Mercury and seek his blessings. During the Vrat most of the devotees keep fast and special 'Naivedya' is prepared which is offered to Lord Buddha. After the puja, naivedya is offered in the form of food.
One who observes Budh Ashtami fast gets freedom from all his sins. By worshiping Lord Shiva and Parvati on this day, one gets freedom from the sins of previous births. Budh Ashtami Vrat is also observed by those who are suffering from 'Budh Graha Dosh', which brings them happiness and peace in future.
