Bhanu Saptami is also known as Surya Saptami, Maghi Saptami, Achala Saptami, Surya Jayanti and Rath Saptami. This festival is celebrated on the Saptami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Magh month. It is called Surya Jayanti because it is believed that on this day the Sun God illuminated the world with his light. On this day, devotees worship Lord Sun to please him and receive his blessings. - Women welcome the auspicious rays of the sun by making colorful rangoli in the courtyard of the house.
- Water is offered to Lord Sun at sunrise.
- "Om Ghrani Suryaya Namah" and "Om Suryaya Namah" mantras are chanted.
Bhog and donation:
- Prasad, flowers and water are offered to the Sun God.
- Milk is boiled in an earthen pot and placed in the direction of the sun, which symbolizes sending energy to the sun.
- Kheer made of twelve grains and wheat is donated to Brahmins.
Bhanu Saptami Story
On Bhanu Saptami, the Sun God came to earth riding a golden chariot surrounded by sacred lotus. His chariot is pulled by seven horses, which symbolize the seven rays of the sun. His charioteer Arun protected the earth from the intense heat of the sun.
