Located just 2 km from the Vrindavan Railway Station, Radha Raman Temple is one of the most revered modern Hindu temples in Vrindavan. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, who is called “Radha Raman” – the one who pleases Radha. The temple complex houses the original Shaligram idol of Lord Krishna, who appeared from the Shaligram rock and has a mysterious smile on his face. The Samadhi of Gopal Bhatta Goswami is also located in the same complex, which is close to the place where Radha Raman appeared.
The Radha Raman Temple is considered to be the most important of the seven temples of Thakur in Vrindavan. The temple holds great reverence especially among the followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Originally established in 1542, the temple was beautifully constructed, while it was rebuilt in 1826 by Shah Bihari Lalji. An interesting fact is that, even though this temple is named after Radha, there is no idol of Radha Rani here. Lord Krishna's presence is expressed only by his crown, highlighting the unique tradition of the temple.
Gopal Bhatta Swami, who entered Vrindavan about 500 years ago, is believed to be the founder of this temple. After Chaitanya Mahaprabhu disappeared, he felt a detachment from the Lord. In a dream, the Lord instructed him to go to Nepal and have darshan. While taking a bath in the Kali Gandaki River of Nepal, 12 Shaligram rocks entered Gopal Bhatta Swami's water pot. The next morning, when he opened the pot, 11 of the rocks were missing and one of the rocks revealed itself as the idol of Lord Krishna, which came to be known as Radha Raman. This incident is considered to be the legend of Radha Raman Temple.
The architecture of Radha Raman Temple is done in modern Hindu style, with a self-manifested idol of Shaligram stone prominently placed. The huge temple building is situated on the river bank, which adds to its natural beauty. The temple complex also houses the Samadhi of Gopal Bhatta Goswami, who is believed to be the founder of this temple. It is said that the clothes used by Guru Chaitanya Mahaprabhu are rarely available here, which adds to the uniqueness of this temple.
