Sindhara Dooj is a famous festival of Hindus, this festival is especially for women. Sindhara Dooj is celebrated on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Moon in the month of Shravan and is celebrated one day before Hariyali Teej and two days after Hariyali Amavasya. In North India this day is auspicious in Panchang and Hindi calendar.

Sindhara is sent to the homes of daughters-in-law among Hindus on the day of Sindhara Dooj. The significance of Sindhara Dooj is very important for the married women. There is an offering of sweets and makeup items and costumes in Sindhara. If the daughter is in the in-laws house then Sindhara is sent from the maternal home and if the daughter-in-law has gone to the maternal home then Sindhara is sent from the in-laws' house. Sindhara daughter-in-law from in-laws is given only in the first year of marriage. Mostly Sindhara daughter is given from her maternal home. This offering is given on the day of Sindhara Dooj. Therefore, this day has special significance for the married people. The Mehndi that came in Sindhara is made in her hands by the sweets and the next day she observes Teej fast.

Customs and Traditions

  • Swings are also put on the day of Sindhara Dooj. Women sing songs while swinging and also get Mehndi etc.
  • Sweets and things that came in Sindhara are distributed.
  • After worshiping Goddess Parvati in the evening on the day of Teej, Sindhara is given to the mother-in-law.
