A deep study of these four levels of sound helps us understand that speech is not just a spoken sound, but it is a means of deeper understanding of cosmic energy and consciousness. It helps us to establish a deeper connection between the truth within us and the cosmic truth.
Many ancient scriptures speak of the universe being created by sound or cosmic vibrations. Rig Veda 1.164.45 states:
"Chātvārī vāk parimītā padānī
tānī vidurvarṣmā ye mānishināḥ
Guhā trini nihita nēṅgyāyanti
turīyam vācho manushya vādanti॥"
Vaikhari speech has four levels. All the four levels are known to the wise brahmins who are manīshis (thoughtful). Three levels are guhya (secret) and they are not revealed, only the fourth level (vaikhari vāni) is spoken by humans.
Humans utter only Vaikhari Vak, while the remaining three levels are secret and can be understood only through meditation or deep spiritual practice.
The word 'Vak' means speech or spoken. Vedic Vak is the sacred speech preserved in the Vedas. It is not just a collection of words but the carrier of cosmic knowledge and truth. Vedic sages have also called it Brahma Vak, which indicates the power to create and operate the universe.
Vak is divided into four levels in the Vedic tradition:
Utterance of Vedic Vak not only provides mental peace but also activates the energy centers of the body. It plays an important role in the practice of yoga and meditation. Through chanting and reciting the Vedas, the sadhak can reach the levels of higher consciousness.
Modern science also accepts the power of sound. Research has shown that specific sounds can affect brain waves. Chanting Vedic mantras not only provides mental peace, but it also has a positive effect on physical health.
