The Maha Kumbh Mela is a symbol of India's ancient traditions and spirituality. Its origin is attributed to the great 8th century philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, who established it as a religious event. The Maha Kumbh Mela is also mentioned in the Puranas, which describe the churning of the ocean between gods and demons for Amrit (nectar of immortality). During this churning, a pot of nectar (kumbh) emerged, for which the gods and demons struggled. It is believed that Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini and freed the Kumbh from the grip of demons.

Mahakumbh of Prayagraj 2025 and its Mythological Significance

According to legend, when Lord Vishnu was going towards heaven with a pot of nectar, a few drops of nectar fell on earth at four holy places - Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj. It is believed that these drops fill the rivers with nectar in cosmic time, where pilgrims bathe and experience purity and immortality. This is the reason why Maha Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years at one of these four places, whereby millions of devotees take a dip in the Sangam to purify their souls.

Tradition and Religious belief of Kumbh

The original meaning of the word 'Kumbh' is 'sacred pot of nectar'. 'Kumbh' is mentioned in ancient texts like Rigveda, Atharvaveda and Yajurveda, which describe the benefits of bathing in the Sangam during this period. It is believed that bathing in the Sangam eliminates negative effects and purifies the mind and soul.

Kumbh Mela in History and Scriptures

An important historical evidence of Kumbh Mela is found from the reign of King Harshvardhan (590-647 AD). The famous Chinese traveler Huen Tsang has mentioned the grandeur of the Kumbh Mela of Prayagraj in his travelogue. According to him, King Harshvardhan organized a huge gathering on the holy Sangam bank and donated his wealth to scholars and ascetics.

Apart from this, 10 Akharas were established by Adi Shankaracharya to organize Kumbh Mela and Ardh Kumbh Mela, which became an integral part of this religious event. Kumbh Mela of Prayagraj is considered to be the most important among all other Kumbh Melas. The Kumbh Mela held here at the holy site of Sangam is considered to be the source of spirituality, knowledge, and light. It is believed that Prajapati Brahma performed Ashwamedha Yagna on the banks of Sangam here and created the universe.

Thus, Maha Kumbh Mela is not only a religious event, but it is also a living example of Indian culture, spirituality, and tradition. There are mythological, historical, and cultural reasons behind celebrating it, which make it a grand event and attract millions of pilgrims from India and abroad.

Maha Kumbh Mela: Astrological and Cultural Significance

The Maha Kumbh Mela is based on different astrological conditions at each place, which are determined by the position of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter. The festival is celebrated when the position of these planets attains perfection, which is considered a very holy time in Hinduism. The Kumbh Mela is a wonderful amalgamation of astronomy, astrology, spirituality, ritual traditions and socio-cultural customs, making the event a symbol of profound knowledge.

The Kumbh Mela attracts people from all religions, including sadhus, Naga sadhus, sanyasis and common devotees. Naga sadhus and sanyasis follow intense sadhana and spiritual discipline and come into public life only during the Kumbh Mela. At the same time, spiritualists and common people who follow Hinduism also attend the fair in large numbers.

There are many special events in the Kumbh Mela. The traditional procession of the Akharas, called 'Peshwai', is taken out with elephants, horses and chariots. The performance of Naga sadhus during the 'Shahi Snan', their gleaming swords and traditional rituals, besides several cultural activities attract lakhs of devotees to the fair.
