Important information
- This passage is a hymn of devotion and surrender, often referred to as the Gajendra Moksha Stotra. It is found in the Bhagavata Purana (Srimad Bhagavatam) and narrates the story of Gajendra, the king of elephants, who is caught by a crocodile in a lake and prays fervently to Lord Vishnu for salvation.

Yo'smātparasmācca parastaṁ prapadye svayambhuvam ||3||
Yaḥ svātmanīdaṁ nijamāyayārpitaṁ
Kvacidvibhātaṁ kvaca tattirohitam |
Aviddhadṛk sākṣyubhayaṁ tadīkṣate
Sa ātma mūlo'vat māṁ parātparaḥ ||4||
Kālena pañcatvamiteṣu kṛtsnaśo

Tamastadāsīd gahanaṁ gabhīraṁ

Na yasya devā ṛṣayaḥ padaṁ vidu-
Rjantuḥ punaḥ ko'rhati gantumīritum |
Yathā naṭasyākṛtibhirviceṣṭato

Didṛkṣavo yasya padaṁ sumaṅgalaṁ
Vimukta saṅgā munayaḥ susādhavaḥ |

Na vidyate yasya na janma karma vā
Na nāma rūpe guṇadoṣa eva vā |
Tathāpi lokāpyayasambhavāya yaḥ

Karotu me'dabhradayo vimokṣaṇam ||19||
Ekāntino yasya na kañcanārtha
Vāñchanti ye vai bhagavatprapannāḥ |
Atyadbhutaṁ taccharitaṁ sumaṅgalaṁ
Gāyanta ānanda samudramagnāḥ ||20||
Tamakṣaraṁ brahma paraṁ pareśa-
Mavyaktamādhyātmikayogagamyam |
Atīndriyaṁ sūkṣmamivātidūra-
Manantamādyaṁ paripūrṇamīḍe ||21||
Yasya brahmādayo devā vedā lokāścarācarāḥ |
Nāmarūpavibhedena phalgvyā ca kalayā kṛtāḥ ||22||
Yathārciṣo'gneḥ saviturgabhasthayo
Niryānti saṁyāntyasakṛt svarociṣaḥ |
Tathā yato'yaṁ guṇasaṁpravāho
Buddhirmanaḥ khāni śarīrasargāḥ ||23||
Sa vai na devāsuramartyatiryaṅg
Na strī na ṣaṇḍo na pumān na jantuḥ |
Nāyaṁ guṇaḥ karma na sanna cāsan
Niṣedhaśeṣo jayatādaśeṣaḥ ||24||
Jijīviṣe nāhamihāmuya ki-
Mantarbahiścāvṛtayebhayonyā |
Icchāmi kālena na yasya viplava-
stasyātmalokāvaraṇasya mokṣam ||25||
So'haṁ viśvasṛjaṁ viśvamaviśvaṁ viśvavedasam |
Viśvātmanamajaṁ brahma praṇato'smi paraṁ padam ||26||
Yogarandhita karmāṇo hṛdi yogavibhāvite |
Yogino yaṁ prapaśyanti yogeśaṁ taṁ nato'smyaham ||27||
Namo namastubhyamasahyavega-
Śaktitrayāyākhiladhīguṇāya |
Prapannapālāya durantashaktaye
Kadindriyāṇāmanavāpyavartmane ||28||
Nāyaṁ veda svamātmānaṁ yacchaktyāhaṁdiyā hatam |
Taṁ duratyayamāhātmyaṁ bhagavantamito'smyaham ||29||

Evam gajendramupavarṇitanirviśeṣaṁ
Brahmādayo vividhaliṅgabhidābhimānāḥ |
Naite yadopasasṛpurnikhilātmakatvāt
Tatrākhilāmaramayo harirāvirāsīt ||30||
Taṁ tadvadārttamupalabhya jagannivāsaḥ
Stotraṁ niśamya divijaiḥ saha saṁstuvadbhiḥ |
Chandomayena garuḍena samuhyamāna –
Ścakrāyudho'bhyagamadāśu yato gajendraḥ ||31||
So'ntassarasyurubalena gṛhīta ārttaḥ
Dṛṣṭvā garutmati harim kha upāttacakram |
Utkṣipya sāmbujakaraṁ giramāha kṛcchā –
Nārāyaṇākhilaguro bhagavannamaste ||32||
Taṁ vīkṣya pīḍitamajaḥ sahasāvatīrya
Sagrāhamāśu sarasaḥ kṛpayojjahāra |
Grāhād vipāṭitamukhādariṇā gajendraṁ
Sampaśyatāṁ hariramūmuca dustriyāṇām ||33||

Shri Shuka said:
- Thus, resolving with a focused mind and fixing his thoughts in his heart, Gajendra began chanting the supreme mantra that he had learned in his previous birth.
Gajendra said:
- Obeisance to that Supreme Being, the foundation of consciousness, the source of all beings, the primordial seed of creation, and the ultimate controller of all.
- To Him, from whom this world originates, by whom it exists, who is its essence, and who transcends everything – I surrender to the self-manifested One.
- He who, through His divine power, manifests and conceals this universe within Himself, and who observes all as the eternal witness without being touched by creation – may He save me, the Supreme Cause of all.
- At the time when all worlds, their rulers, and causes are annihilated, there exists deep, unfathomable darkness. Beyond that darkness shines the glorious Supreme Being.
- Neither the gods, sages, nor beings know His path. Who, then, can fathom or describe the course of the Supreme, like an actor whose movements are hard to predict? May He protect me!
- Those noble sages and virtuous ascetics, who have renounced all attachments, wander in the forests, free of worldly vows, filled with divine love for all beings, and meditate on His auspicious feet. He is my refuge.
- He has neither birth nor actions, nor does He have a name or form, nor qualities or faults. Yet, for the creation and dissolution of the world, He assumes names and forms through His divine Maya.
- Salutations to that Supreme Lord, the infinite source of all power, formless yet manifesting infinite forms, the one whose deeds are wondrous!
- I bow to the inner light of consciousness, the witness of all, the Supreme Soul, who is beyond the reach of words, mind, and intellect.
- By purity of heart and detachment, He is realized by the wise. Salutations to the Lord of liberation and the blissful knowledge of self-realization.
- Salutations to the tranquil One, the terrifying One, the bewildering One, the possessor of qualities, and the qualityless One. Salutations to the One who is impartial and the embodiment of pure knowledge.
- I bow to the knower of the field (the soul), the overseer of all, the eternal witness, the root cause of creation, and the Supreme Being.
- Salutations to the seer of all sensory objects and the cause of all perceptions. I bow to Him who manifests as the shadow of the unreal and as the radiance of the real.
- Salutations to the root cause of all, causeless yet the cause of wonders. I bow to Him, the ocean of sacred scriptures and the ultimate goal of liberation.
- I salute the One whose brilliance is hidden by the qualities of nature, whose mind is agitated by the vibrations of those qualities but is self-luminous and free from actions.
- To Him, who liberates beings like me from the noose of material attachments, who is free, compassionate, and the all-pervading soul in every body, I offer my obeisance.
- To the Supreme Lord, whose knowledge resides in the hearts of liberated souls and who is beyond attachment, I bow. He is the controller of those detached from worldly desires.
- Those who seek Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha worship Him and attain their desired goals. May that boundless-hearted Lord grant me liberation and freedom.
- Those who are solely devoted to Him, desiring nothing else, sing His extraordinary and auspicious glories, immersed in the ocean of divine bliss.
- I adore the imperishable, supreme Brahman, who is the highest authority, unmanifest, attainable only through spiritual yoga, beyond the senses, subtler than the subtlest, and infinite.
- From Him originate the gods like Brahma, the Vedas, and the entire universe. He manifests all names and forms as a mere fraction of His infinite power.
- Just as the flames of fire or the rays of the sun emanate and return repeatedly, similarly, from Him arise the flow of qualities, intellect, mind, elements, and bodies.
- He is neither god, demon, human, animal, female, male, nor neuter, nor a specific quality, nor action. He is beyond affirmation and negation. May that all-encompassing being triumph!
- I desire neither life here nor life elsewhere, nor am I attached to any form of existence. I seek liberation from this bondage of creation and the veiling of self-knowledge.
- I bow to the Supreme Being, who is the source of creation, sustenance, and dissolution, who is infinite and unborn, the foundation of the universe, and the ultimate refuge.
- Salutations to the Lord of yoga, whom yogis behold in their hearts, free of karmic bondage, through the power of yoga.
- I bow to You, who possess insurmountable strength, whose energy comprises the three powers, who are the support of all knowledge, and whose path is unfathomable to the senses.
- Not even I, bound by ego and deluded by Your power, know my true self. I surrender to that Supreme Lord, whose glory is beyond comprehension.
Shri Shuka said:
- As Gajendra sang this praise, describing the formless Brahman, none of the gods, including Brahma, could approach Him because He pervades everything. Then Lord Hari, the soul of all beings, appeared.
- Hearing Gajendra’s lament and his heartfelt prayer, the Lord, seated on Garuda and wielding His discus, swiftly arrived where Gajendra was trapped.
- Seeing the Lord, Gajendra raised his lotus-like trunk in agony and called out to Him. The Lord, ever merciful, descended from Garuda.
- With His discus, the Lord severed the crocodile’s jaws and freed Gajendra, delivering him from the clutches of death.
