According to Hindu calendar, this fast of Shivaratri is known as monthly Shivaratri on Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha. Shivaratri is the great festival of the convergence of Shiva and Shakti. Monthly means 'Maha or month' and Shivaratri means 'Lord Shiva's night'.
According to Indian mythology, Lord Shiva appeared as Linga at the midnight of Maha Shivaratri. Shiva Linga was first worshiped by Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. This day is celebrated every month while Mahashivaratri falls once a year. Fasting of the monthly Shivaratri helps in achieving desired wishes.
Devotees, who wish to observe the monthly Shivaratri fast, can start it from the day of Mahashivaratri and continue it for a year. It is believed that by following the grace of Lord Shiva, observing the monthly Shivaratri fast can accomplish impossible and difficult tasks. Devotees should stay awake during Shivaratri and perform Shiva Puja during midnight. Unmarried women observe this fast to get married and married women observe this fast to maintain peace and tranquility in their married life.
