Chaurasi Temple holds a special significance in Hinduism and is an ancient and important religious site. The temple is located in the town of Bharmour in the Chamba district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The temple complex, which is made up of 84 separate temples, is about 1400 years old and has immense religious significance. The life of the people of Bharmour is centered around this temple complex, known as the Chaurasi Temple. The Chaurasi Temple is a religious and cultural heritage not only of Bharmour but of the whole of India. Its antiquity, architecture, and religious significance make it a unique site. Thousands of devotees visit the Chaurasi Temple every year and pay their respects.

Historical Background

The Chaurasi Temple was built by King Sahil Varman of Bharmour in the 7th century. This temple complex was built in honour of the 84 Siddhas or Yogis who came from Kurukshetra and meditated in Bharmour during their visit to the Manimahesh Lake. These Yogis blessed King Sahil Varman with ten sons and a daughter, Champavati, as the king had no heir.

Architecture and Structure

The centre of the Chaurasi Temple complex is the Manimahesh Temple, which has beautiful architecture of the Vallabhi-Shikhara style. The complex comprises of 84 large and small temples dedicated to various deities. Many of these temples have been repaired from time to time, but their antiquity and sanctity remain intact even today. This vast flat ground located in the centre of Bharmour presents a delightful, clean and picturesque view.

Religious Significance

The Chaurasi Temple holds immense religious significance. It is said that the pilgrimage to the Manimahesh Lake is considered incomplete until the devotee pays obeisance at these temples. Dharmeshwar Mahadev (Dharmaraja) Temple is one of the most revered temples of Hindus. Apart from this, bathing in the pond of Bharmani Mata Temple of Goddess Brahmani, located 4 km from Bharmour in Himachal Pradesh, is also considered extremely important.

Chaurasi Temple Complex

The Chaurasi Temple Complex has many important temples, in which Lord Shiva and Shakti are worshipped. A temple of Lord Vishnu, in which he is in Narasimha avatar, is also built in the same style. The entire area and temples are dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and Shakti, as it is believed that the Manimahesh Kailash peak is their abode and it promises salvation.
