Why is the use of Tulsi forbidden in the worship of Lord Shiva?

The worship of Lord Shiva has special significance in Hinduism. Various types of flowers and leaves are offered on the Shivling, but the use of Tulsi is considered forbidden in the worship of Lord Shiva. There are many religious, mythological and spiritual reasons behind this. Let us understand these reasons in detail.

Mythology

According to mythology, the story of Tulsi (Vrinda) is associated with Lord Shiva. Vrinda, who was the wife of a demon king Jalandhar, was very powerful due to her devotion to her husband. Due to Vrinda's penance and devotion to her husband, even Lord Shiva could not defeat Jalandhar. Then Lord Vishnu resorted to deceit and killed Jalandhar. Vrinda was very saddened by this incident and she cursed Lord Vishnu. Vrinda sacrificed her life and a Tulsi plant grew from her body. For this reason, the use of Tulsi is considered forbidden in the worship of Lord Shiva.

Religious belief

According to religious beliefs, the Tulsi plant is very dear to Lord Vishnu. The relationship between Lord Vishnu and Tulsi is considered extremely sacred. Since Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva have different forms and worship methods, the use of Tulsi is forbidden in the worship of Lord Shiva.

Spiritual reason

From a spiritual point of view, Tulsi leaves are offered to Lord Vishnu, while things like Bel Patra, Dhatura, and Bhang are offered to Lord Shiva. Offering Tulsi on Shivling is considered a mixture of the worship methods of Shiva and Vishnu, which is not considered correct from a religious and spiritual point of view.

Mention in the scriptures

The Shiva Purana and other religious texts clearly state that the use of Tulsi is forbidden in the worship of Lord Shiva. According to the scriptures, offering Tulsi on Shivling does not yield the fruits of worship and this worship is considered incomplete.

There are religious, mythological and spiritual reasons behind the prohibition of the use of Tulsi in the worship of Lord Shiva. Following this belief, devotees do not use Tulsi in the worship of Lord Shiva and offer him Bel Patra, Dhatura, Bhaang etc. Thus, by respecting religious traditions and beliefs, we can worship Lord Shiva in the right way and get his blessings.
